Ensemble live room

Capture small groups in one pass — drums, bass, keys and horns with gobos and iso booths when separation matters.

Jazz trio playing live in recording room with drums and piano.

Building a track one overdub at a time can sound tight, yet sometimes you need the room: a drummer locking with bass, horns breathing between phrases. Our 42 m² live room on Haarlemmerweg fits up to 5 musicians, with 16 inputs and roughly 22 mics in the locker.

Besides the open floor we have 2 iso spots for amps, vocals or brass when bleed grows. Fleur Dekker or Tom Willems runs the session; Naomi Pieters schedules hours, half days or full days. Planning vocal overdubs or mixing afterward? Tell us early so session templates stay consistent.

How it works

  1. Line-up

Send instrumentation, tempo list and backline needs. We confirm everything fits and reserve extra DIs or gobos.

  2. Setup

Mic placement, headphone feeds and soundcheck — allow 45–90 minutes for a quartet depending on complexity.

  3. Tracking

Takes with marker notes; punch-ins when possible without restarting the whole band. Overtime in 15-minute steps.

  4. Export

Multitrack WAV from the session plus an optional rough mix. Files kept 24 months; see terms and conditions for download windows.

Room and acoustics

The live room is larger than our vocal booth (11 m²) and tuned for ensemble energy: not as dry as a booth, not as washy as a hall. Gobos break early reflections between drums and guitar cabs; the ceiling is treated where needed so overheads stay usable.

Volume and genre matter — a jazz trio needs different placement than rock with two cabs. We do not keep a piano on site; bring upright or Rhodes yourself or via your hire contact.

Typical bookings

  • Jazz trio or quartet with drums, bass and keys
  • Indie band wanting one live take per song
  • Brass section over playback
  • Session players cutting reference tracks for later mixing

Fully in-the-box electronic acts gain little here — choose in-studio mixing or mastering instead. Podcasts belong in podcast recording.

Backline

Bass amp and DI are available; a standard drum kit with snare, kick, overheads and room mics is set. Guitar amps go in an iso spot or behind a gobo — you supply the amp. Bring your own snare, cymbals or sticks for specific tone.

We do not rent backline commercially; gear in the building is for sessions booked at Molgulaxeno. Damage to your instruments stays your insurance topic.

Engineer and monitoring

The engineer runs preamps and a Pro Tools session at 48 kHz and builds per-player headphone mixes. Click tracks are fine; live metronome in the room is optional. No video capture.

We keep on-the-fly balance to a rough mix — final mixing is a separate service. We can send a quick reference mix after wrap so you pick keepers at home.

What to bring

Charts, tempo maps, spare strings, tuners and any mic notes you care about. Deliver playback as WAV on a stick or link before the date. Everyone should be 16 or older, or arrange supervision per terms and conditions.

Access: We are at Haarlemmerweg 239, a short walk from the Haarlemmerweg stop (GVB bus 22 towards Indische Buurt). From Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, allow about twelve minutes on foot via Haarlemmerweg. On-street paid parking is available; you can park bicycles in front of the building. The studio entrance is at street level beside the wide front windows. — load amps and cases through the street entrance beside the wide windows.
